· June 1. Indian troops torture two civilians in Darvish area of Shopian and arrest two other innocent people. And in the Vechi Degree area of Pulwama, army personnel loot the houses of suspected militants and torture Mohammad Ismail, Ali Mohammad and Abdur Rashid.

--To punish the local community for boycotting the "parliamentary elections," the occupation troops in Haral Qaziabad area of Hindwara close all the grocery stores and hydro-power stations.

· June 2. In an interview with the BBC, Mr. Ved Bhaseem, the editor-in-chief of The Kashmir Times, a daily published from Jammu, says the farcical exercise would neither give the true representation to Kashmiris in the [Indian] parliament nor the aim of bringing the people in to the national mainstream or restoration of democracy in the state. "This [parliamentary election] cannot be considered as a democratic process in the real sense, as a democratic process especially elections should be free, fair and impartial and without any pressure, that did not happen here at all," he added.

--In a crackdown in Darbagh, Pulwama, troops beat civilians and looted houses.

· June 3. The results of the fraudulent parliamentary "elections" spark off infighting among pro­India militant groups in various cities. Authorities impose curfew in southern Kashmir and following that troops kill five renegades and injure 10 others. The incident was sparked off when pro­India thugs, Muslim Mujahideen (Naba Azad group) and Ikhwanul Muslimoon (Kukaparay group) attacked Congress and Janata Dal candidates while counting votes in Islamabad parliamentary constituency. The groups call the "elections" rigged and a joke and they allege that they have been used by India. The Ikhwanul Muslimoon told reporters in Srinagar that the government had assured the group victory of its candidates.

· June 5. Troops set fire to civilian shops and the cattle farm of Ghulam Mohammad. They arrest five other innocent people during a search operation in Qamu area of Pulwama. A large number of people are kept in open scorching heat throughout the day. The occupation personnel also carry out a crackdown in Kararipura and Yathlipura areas and subject people to severe torture. Feroz Ahmad and Mohammad Altaf are severely tortured in Dasu and later thrown on a deserted road in semi­conscience condition.

--In Birva area of Badgam, troops set fire to houses of two suspected militants and a civilian, Haji Ghulam Qadir. They also torture four civilians from that area.

· June 6. Occupation troops ransack and damage shop of Mohammad Sultan Dar in Dagarpura Vichy and in the Dittapura areas of Pulwama, they torture and arrest Maulvi Mohammad Yasin, Mohammad Iqbal and Gulzar Ahmed.

--In Tahab area of Pulwama, troops torture Javed, who was recently released from detention, and leave him in half-dead condition on the road.

--The inhabitants of Gabarpura village report that troops have made their lives miserable. Teenage girls say they are regularly forced to strip and dance for the pleasure of troops, and the farmers are subjected to forced labour at the military camps.

--During a crackdown in Kanigam civilians are severely tortured.

· June 7. In Turkungam area of Shopian, several civilians are severely tortured by Indian troops during a crackdown. Besides molesting the women, troops destroy two houses.

--Indian occupation soldiers ban all activity on a local river.

· June 8. Two prominent leaders of All­Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC), Abdul Ghani Lone and Syed Ali Gilani barely escape an attempt on their lives when unidentified assailants attacked their residences in Srinagar. Gilani's security guards returned fire but the assailants escaped.

--Troops make their way into the house of Ali Mohammad Dar in Turkangam area of Shopian and scamped off with the valuables.

· June 9. In Leaguepura Wichy, Indian army arrests civilians. In Dangerpura, Rashipura, and Goripura the civilians are inhumanly tortured and Bilal Ahmed, the brother of a suspected militant, is killed on the spot and his dead body hanged on a lamp post.

· June 10. In Udhampur, Garrison area Indian army arrests whole families of five suspected militants; all males are taken to interrogation and torture centre and females to army camp.

--A complete statewide hartal (strike) in Kashmir, against assassination attempt of APHC leaders Syed Ali Gilani and Abdul Ghani Lone. All government and semi government offices, markets, shops, banks and educational institutions remain closed and all sorts of transport is off the road.

--In a memorandum to the UN Secretary General Boutros Boutros Ghali, through the UN military representatives stationed in Srinagar, the APHC leaders emphasise that Indian occupation troops in Kashmir have resorted to killing infants; the barbarian troops have tried to martyr an 8-month-old baby "Ada" by gun powder in Rawalpura, Srinagar. The memorandum further explains that the purpose of the present struggle is to have the UN resolutions on the Kashmiris' right of self determination implemented.

· June 11. The occupation authorities suspend water and power supply to Kulgam town, to punish the people for boycotting the polls.

--The troops fire mortar shells on the civilian population in the Kulgam area destroying a house, a-cattle-farm, killing all the cattle in the farm. The brutal army also blasts fifteen houses belonging to relatives of seven militants in Birva area.

· June 12. Three suspected sympathisers of militants are severely tortured by brutal forces in Suf Shali area of Anantnag.

--During a crackdown in Zinagir Harun area of Baramulla, troops torture civilians and arrest a college student Mohammad Shafi Mir.

· June 13. In Baramulla the troops siege many towns and house-to-house search operations continue. People are out in open and no one is allowed to move.

--The Indian occupation forces set fire to 15 houses of suspected militants. People come out to demonstrate against army brutality and chant slogans against Indian occupation.

· June 14. India's puppet administration in Kashmir launches a big operation against the state government employees who refused to perform duty during the parliamentary "elections" in the disputed territory last month. The operation involves large­scale arrests, suspensions, dismissals and stoppage of salaries.

· June 15. Occupation personnel order a suspected militant to surrender during a crackdown in Chaudura, however his, non compliance lead troops to open random fire on civilians in which 20 people are killed. The people take to the streets to protest against the inhuman incident.

--The troops severely torture a medical assistant Vaqar Ahmad and molest seven female patients in Chaudura.

· June 16. Indian forces raid the home of a suspected militant, damage all valuables, severely torture the family, kidnap two teenage girls and set fire to their house in Shahpura area of Badgam. Thousands of people take to the streets to protest against the incident.

--Occupation personnel carry out a crackdown in Kithan area of Bandipura and five civilians are severely tortured.

· June 17. Occupation troops raid and ransack the home as well as the office of Syed Shabbir Shah in Barzula, severely torturing and arresting everyone present there. The APHC condemns the operation and says that the Indian rulers cannot deter the Hurriyat leaders from their struggle through such heinous tactics and the freedom movement would continue till the goal of liberation from Indian clutches is attained.

--Troops carry out a crackdown in Rajvar Village, Hindwara and besides torturing people, arrest one civilian and demand Rs. 60,000 for his release.

· June 18. A bullet­ridden body of Ubaid Butt, a civilian, son of Abdullah Butt, a trader, of Naogam, Islamabad is recovered from Achhabal area. Ubaid Butt was taken hostage by Indian agents six days ago.

--Indian forces gang-rape Ayesha, a nine­year-old girl in Baramulla. Police file a case against the troops. A large-scale protest is carried out in front of an army camp against this dastardly incident.

--Newspapers in Kashmir resume publication after 59 days of ban imposed by the occupational authorities.

· June 20. In Noor Bagh, Mohammad Akli Butt, a worker of Jamaat­e­Islami, is killed by Indian Task Force men. Two years ago his son Alamgir was killed by the occupation forces.

· June 21. All business houses, government and semi­government offices, educational institutions are shutdown and traffic off the road to protest gang­rape of 9-year-old girl Ayesha.

--In Pazhal the troops torture Ghulam Hasan Butt to death. He was recently released from an army detention camp.

--In Srinagar at Regal Chowk, members of the Task Force shoot dead Ghulam Mohammad, a civilian, and his daughter Hameeda.

· June 22. The APHC underscores the need for tripartite talks to find a durable solution to the long outstanding Kashmir dispute in the interest of peace and security in South Asia. Addressing a gathering on the occasion of a founding anniversary of Awami Majlis­e­Amal, Syed Ali Gilani leader of Jamaat­e­Islami, urges India to give-up its policy of repression in Kashmir and face reality.

--The arrest of an Imam, Maulvi Mohammad Latif, in Ikhrajpura area sparked off large­scale anti­India demonstrations in Srinagar. The protesters assembled in front of an army camp to press their demand for his immediate release.

--During a crackdown in Dangarpura, Sopore, troops gather all male villagers in an open area for an identification parade and in a house-to-house search operation they ransack almost all homes and attempted to gang-rape women; in the process nine women are killed.

· June 23. The task forces and troops torch four houses, three shops and murder three civilians in Hanjipura.

--Indian troops have set up a new camp in Tarka Vangam, Shopian, and on the very first day they critically torture three civilians and gang-rape two teenagers.

· June 24. In Buchwara, Srinagar, Indian task force personnel open fire upon defenceless civilians and kill eleven people.

· June 26. A Sikh regiment of Indian Army subjects civilians to torture in Hanjibag Berwah area of Badgam and blasts the house of a Jamaat­e­Islami worker Abdul Ahad Fayyaz.

--Ms. Jane Schelly, wife of "Al- Faran's" American hostage Donald Hotching, addressing a Press Conference, appealed to Pakistani, Indian and Kashmiri organisations to help release the hostages. She said that her family members are in continuous agony due to her husband's kidnapping, and thanked all those countries who were trying to help secure their release.

· June 27. Bullet­ridden corpses of Fayyaz Ahmed, Abdur Rehman and Riaz Ahmed Dar are found in Naogam, Islamabad.

· June 30. Occupation troops besiege a village in Dahan area of Patan and order people out for an identification parade. After this, troops set fires across the village resulting in the destruction of dozens of houses and property worth millions of rupees.

--An attempt is made by government-sponsored militants to set fire to the historic Jamia Masjid (Mosque), in the heart of the old city of Srinagar, but police and security forces who detected flames coming out from the mosque, rushed to the site, and succeeded in putting out the fire. When the news spread in different parts of the city as well as in other parts of the Valley, people rushed to the streets protesting and demanding a high level inquiry into the incident.

· July 2. In Budgam, civilians are ordered out of their homes and to line up for an identification parade; several persons are tortured and wounded. The barbarian forces cut the tongue of a civilian, Dr. Ghulam Nabi.

--Soldiers of Sikh Regiment throw corpses of five persons, beyond identification, on the road. Civilians took the dead bodies and laid them to rest in Bundo, Kulgam. However, it is learnt that the dead are targets of custodial killing and belong to Srinagar.

· July 3. In Kashigarh, Teli and Garmal areas of Doda, during a crackdown the occupation forces order civilians out of their houses for an identification parade and severely beat and torture males between ages 12-40.

--The troops in Udhampur arrest a young-lady, torture and then throw her in serious condition on the deserted road.

--The task force personnel kidnap and torture to death Mr. M. Amin Butt, an employee of Law Department and activist of Jamaat­e­Islami, in Tral area of Pulwama.

· July 4. Troops lay siege on Kadar, Kulgam locality, arrest a civilian, Abdul Latif, and torture several others. Later during the day Abdul Latif is found laying on the road and has been admitted in the hospital.

· July 5. Indian task force personnel forcibly enter the home of Abdul Jabbar Butt in Langate area of Baramulla and gun him down, his wife and six other people. His two teenage daughters, Gulshan Akhtar, Parveen Zahida are taken away. People of the area come out to protest against the incident, chanting anti­India slogans and demanding their release. The body of Khurshid Ahmad Ganai is recovered from Achhbal area of Anantnag. He had been missing for more than a year.

· July 6. During the crackdown troops break into the houses in Birva area of Badgam, attempt to rape women, and in a house of Ghulam Mohammad Shaikh, besides arresting his son, gang­rape his four daughters. The local people come out to demonstrate against the incident and chant anti­India slogans. As the situation got out of control, the troops open indiscriminate fire on the protesters, killing 20.

· July 7. Troops carry out a crackdown in Chak Natha area of Kupwara besides blasting a house, arresting two civilians and then demanding Rs. 50,000 for their release.

--The usurper personnel order people out in the open for an identification parade in Telipura area of Lolab and subject them to severe torture.

· July 8. Indian troops gun down 11 kiln workers during a siege of a village in Battakot area of Kupwara. All the workers are non­Kashmiris from the Indian state of Bihar.

· July 9. Occupation troops besiege a town in Pulwama and order people out for an identification parade. Villagers are subjected to severe torture leaving many of them in serious condition. After this, troops set fires across the town resulting in the destruction of several dozens of houses. The army further warns the people that the worst will come if any one of the villagers is found to be cooperating with freedom fighters.

--The APHC strongly condemns the killing of a dozen innocent kiln workers in Battakot area of Kupwara on July 8th, and charge Indian agents as responsible for the ugly incident. It further warns that this is an attempt to defame the liberation movement through such heinous acts but the Kashmiris are well aware of such tactics and determined to frustrate India. The APHC also expresses deep sympathies with the families of the innocent kiln workers.

· July 10. Indian forces carry out a crackdown in Aroni and severely torture civilians in the area.

--In Banihal, troops break into civilian homes and steal rice, wheat, and corn for their own camps.

--In Banglana area of Pulwama troops shot dead a grade 10 student, Riyaz Ahmed, as he stepped out of school.

· July 11. During a search operation in Dardpura Laulab Indian soldiers order people out in the open and gang­rape Salima Bano, Rafiqa Bano, Zareena Bano and Taslima Bano. When people protested, soldiers sprinkle gun powder on several houses and set the powder alight.

--In Shaganpura, Kulgam, civilians are subjected to severe torture, as troops carry out crackdowns and door-to-door searches. Several houses are burnt to the ground.

--The troops stationed at Gafan Camp carry out a crackdown in the area arresting five civilians, torturing Mohammad Karim, 65, to death, spraying gun powder on seven homes and reducing them to ashes.

· July 13. Troops cordon off areas of Yarigam, Pulwama, and break into civilian homes to manhandle some residents and loot valuables. In the same area, troops set fire to ten houses and severely torture five civilians. The local people take to streets to protest brutalities and the killings of Indian forces and chant pro-freedom slogans.

· July 14. Indian army troops carry out a crackdown in Devsar, Islamabad, and fire mortar shells on the home of a civilian, Muhammad Shkir. They kill his entire family of seven and destroy several houses in the area.

--The occupation forces also carry out crackdowns in Wahin Shopian Kapran, Kaler, Pakharpura, Pahlipura, Zoni Koboa, Koyel and Lajora, all towns of Pulwama, torturing and killing many innocent civilians.

· July 15. Indian task forces fire on an ambulance of Soura Medical Institute, in Srinagar, killing its driver, paramedic Abdur Rashid, and a patient.

--In Patan, Indian troops gun down a local leader of Jamaat­e­Islami, Mr. Kabir Butt, a civilian.

--In Wagab Sangrama village of Baramulla the troops start operations against the civilians for a few days. Several houses and buildings are set ablaze during this time. They also arrest eight women, torturing and injuring more than 80 persons.

--Occupation troops' personnel forcibly enter the home of a civilian, Ghulam Mohammed, in Tangram, Kulgam, gun him down and steal all the valuables.

--Troops destroy the entire standing corps in Thaila area of Doda, and subjecte Qazi Abdul Ahad and his family to severe torture.

· July 16. In Sathal area of Baramulla, Indian army arrests Mohammed Yusuf, a civilian, and then beheads him.

--In Surahkot, troops spray gun powder on four homes and reduce them to ashes.

--In Machal area of Kupwara, Border Security Force (BSF) raid a house, arrest three persons, push them across the Cease-Fire-Line and gun them down.

· July 17. A KPI photographer, Ghulam Mustafa, is shot dead by Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), while performing his professional duty at Lolab. The CRPF seizes his camera and other equipment.

--In a massive house-to-house search operation in Doda area of Jammu, troops forcibly enter homes and people are subjected to severe torture. Women are gang raped and about ten youths are killed.

· July 18. During a crackdown in Zeenagir, Baramulla, Indian troops severely torture fifty people and blast a civilian's house, Haji Abdul Ghaffar, a local Jamaat­e­Islami leader.

--In Alosa area, task force personnel gun down a civilian, Mushtaq Ahmed.

· July 19. A complete strike is called by the APHC against the custodial killing of suspected militant Hilal Beg by Indian occupational forces, and the killing of six tourists by some unknown assailants; people hold demonstrations and rallies all over Kashmir.

--In Kharoni, Islamabad, task force personnel gun down a local Jamaat­e­Islami leader Manzoor Ahmed.

--In Hayatpura area of Budgam, the troops torture and kill a civilian, Ghulam Rasul, and spray gun powder to blast his house.

· July 20. During crackdown and house-to-house search operation, the occupation forces shot, at blank-point, three suspected militants. Four innocent civilians are also the targets of the catch-and-kill operation and hundreds are arrested. People take to streets to protest against Indian barbarity.

· July 22. A heavy contingent of troops enters Chitragam area, from a newly setup camp at Babapura in Shopian, Pulwama; lays siege on the locality; people are ordered out into the open for an identification parade; fifteen youths are taken into custody. Three hours later their bodies are brought back in a military truck. As soon as the people notice this, a spontaneous protests erupts. Troops fire on the protesters indiscriminately, another twenty people are killed and fifty more taken to a nearby interrogation centre. Also, on seeing the dead bodies of youths, a mother of a dead youth, Mohammed Yousf, faints and dies on the spot. Women demonstrate against this. Three of them are kidnapped and a few badly beaten and injured.

· July 23. In Handiu area of Pulwama, troops lock a house, from out side, of a suspected militant, M. Akbar Butt, and set it ablaze with the family inside.

--The home of a civilian is raided by Indian troops in Panpura and he is severely lashed, but a large number of civilians gather and force the troops to flee.

· July 24. During a crackdown in Khari area of Panpura, Ashiq Hussain, Bashir Ahmed, Nazeer Ahmed and Fayyaz Ahmed Shah are arrested.

--Troops arrest and gun down four suspected militants in Anawari. People demonstrate and chant slogans against continued Indian rule in Kashmir.

--In Pakhora area of Islamabad, BSF personnel arrest several persons during crackdown, damaging the houses of Khizer Wani and Abdullah Sheikh.

· July 25. The occupation authorities give the green light to "Operation-Flush-Out" (against suspected militants and their sympathisers). It began with 20 villages of central Kashmir which is its initial goal. Major Bheem Shing is in command of the operation.

--Ban is placed on performing Isha (night) prayers in Tarl.

-- During a crackdown in Nagam area of Baramula, troops torture and rape about twelve women. The people demonstrate on the streets against this incident.

· July 26. During a crackdown in Kupwara, the BSF carries out house-to-house search, sets fire to four buildings in a district centre including a school.

--Three beheaded corpses are found in the forest near Dardpura Village in Kupwara. The police take away the dead bodies. The BSF soldiers had captured four youths a week ago. It is said they had been killed in the BSF torture and interrogation centre nearby.

· July 27. In Badarselar area of Pahalgam, occupation troops spray gun powder on a religious school and reduce it to ashes.

--A delegation of the International Committee of Red Cross (ICRC) visits Joint Interrogation Center (JIC) administered by Indian troops in the northern area of occupied Kashmir. The team's remark on the condition of jails is that Kashmiri prisoners are being provided with under-nourished food which is in fact injurious to their health. As a result they are exposed to various diseases. The ICRC team discusses things with the district officials and administration. They also meet the prisoners. The prisoners submitt a memorandum to the ICRC team in which they point out atrocities and excesses that they are facing.

· July 28. The occupation forces arrest a suspected militant, Abdul Mir, in Truchi area of Pulwama, torture and kill him on the spot; then tie explosive material to his legs and blast his body in public. In the same locality the brutal forces loot the valuables from villagers and torch several houses.

· July 29. Army cordons off a vast area of Tangmerg, Dardpura, Zenabagh, Zandalbagh and Panera localities in Pulwama and conducts a house­to­house search operation. During the course more than 30 women are raped and two killed for showing resistance and also 14 youths are arrested.

· July 30. The occupation forces injure six civilians and rape several innocent women, in a crackdown in Miskeen Bagh area of Srinagar. Also, three civilians are arrested in the same area and all of them are killed in an interrogation and torture centre. People demonstrate against India's brutality, chant against Indian brutal forces and demand freedom from the yoke of slavery.

· July 31. Indian task force personnel arrest a civilian, Hafiz Shiraz Ahmad, in Bijbahara area of Islamabad, and later in the day he dies of custodial killing and his tortured body is thrown on the street.

--The CRPF set alight three houses in Kulgam.

--The BSF snatches Rs 20,000 from an innocent civilian, Muzaffar Ahmad, in Chandusa area of Kupwara.

--For the past 15 months the border areas of Kupwara District have been under siege of the Indian army and Military Intelligence. The whole population is under their clutches. House-to-house searches are a daily routine. The people are being mentally and physically tortured on an ongoing basis. The movement of the people is restricted to the point that for almost every thing they need permission from the army authority. There are five military check points for a 12-km route from Dardaharey to Kupwara.

· August 1. Troops cordon off the areas in Pulwama and fire mortar shells on a home where suspected militants were allegedly hiding. Seven people within are killed.

· August 2. During a crackdown in Kulgam, Islamabad, the BSF personnel push a civilian Ramazan Ganai, from the second floor of his house. He dies as a result.

--The local people in Lolinaupura attack Indian task force personnel when they attempt to execute a civilian, Mohammed Hanif.

· August 3. Atrocities and identification parades continue in Pulwama on the third day of siege by the Indian military personnel. Seventeen innocent civiliansare tortured and killed. Three hundred are still waiting for identification. Fifteen young girls are gang-raped. Many houses are ransacked and converted into interrogation and torture centres.

--In an Indian military camp at Kharyu a soldier guns down his own officer.

--People are fleeing from Pulwama after an explosion with a big bang. More than 3 dozen people are injured and 14 are hospitalised in Srinagar's Sadar Hospital. A few of them are in critical condition.

· August 4. The occupation troops stage a crackdown in Hayatpura, Chadora; soldiers raid two homes and gun down seven suspected militants. Many other civilians are also tortured. A large number of people attend their funeral prayers and chant slogans against Indian occupation.

· August 5. The US Senator (Republican) Hank Brown visits Kashmir Valley and meets with prominent leaders of the APHC and others. Sen. Brown regrets India's decision to block an earlier trip to the valley.

--Indian task force personnel kidnap 20 students in Udhampur, shoot dead three and release the remaining. The dead students are Saran Singh, Bheem Singh and Devi Das.

-- Troops cordon off a house of Rustam Muhammad in Palthan, Kishtwar. Rustam and his two brothers, Iqbal Ahmed and Ghulam Mohiyuddin are taken away, and as their mother raise objections troops riddle her with bullets. Later during the day the dead bodies of the three brothers are found near a neighbours' house.

--The troops stage crackdowns in various areas of Pain Town, Srinagar; people are ordered out for an identification parade and many are arrested.

·August 6. Task Force personnel kidnap Ahmedullah, a school teacher, from his home in Bejbihara. Later in the day his bullet­ridden body is found. Local people demonstrate against this gory incident. Also, a large number of people attend his funeral prayer.

--In another incident in Bejbihara, Indian sponsored private army personnel abduct and kill two students, Ghulam Ahmed Rathar and Mushtaq Wani.

· August 7. Indian Election Commission announces "elections" for 87 constituencies of so-called State Legislature Assembly will be held in four phases on September 7, 16, 21 and 30.

--A tortured body of a youth, Shabbir Ahmed Dagar, is found in Safakadal area of Srinagar; he was kidnapped the previous night by Indian-sponsored thugs.

--Occupation forces torture and kill innocent civilians, Abdul Majeed, Mohammad Yusuf in Dangadori area of Pulwama, Ghulam Qadir Dagar in Kulgam area of Islamabad, and Mohammad Ashraf Magrey in Sangroni area of Pulwama.

· August 8. Several residential areas of Srinagar are cordoned off jointly by the BSF, CRPF and regular army units for "Operation Election Cleanup," which include areas of Gokadal, Red Cross Road General Bus Stand, Jehangir Chowk and Exhibition Crossing. Everyone, the traders, students, pedestrians, government employees, and travellers are brought like cattle for identification parades.

--The troops carry out a crackdown in Kalora area of Shopian, raid and destroy a house of a civilian, Abdus Salam Butt. Before leaving the area they warn people not to provide shelter to the freedom fighters and to participate in the "elections" or be prepared to face the consequences.

· August 9. Indian troops carry out a crackdown in Sopore; order people out in the open for an identification parade. During the house-to-house search they round-up ten suspected militants and place them in custody in a near-by torture and interrogation center. Male suspects are ordered to form a separate group and all are subjected to severe beatings and torture including an 80­year­old man. The army also cordons off the District Hospital of Sopore; all staff and patients are ordered out for an identity parade including those on life support.

--During the "Operation Election Cleanup" in Bandipura soldiers open indiscriminate fire; about 200 cattle are wounded and ten people end up dead.

--Government-sponsored thugs kidnap the editor-in-chief of a leading Urdu daily, Al­Safa, Mohammad Ashraf Vakeel, in Srinagar. His father, Mohammad Kamal Vakeel who founded the newspaper, is gunned down by unidentified gunmen in the middle of 1991 in his office.

·August 10. Bodies of four civilians are recovered from beneath three houses which have been reduced to rubble by mortar fire from Indian troops in Chotipura area of Hindwara. The innocent victims of this ugly incident are Ghulam Ahmed Butt, Bashir Ahmed Shah, Bilal Ahmed and Javed Mir, a 10-year-old-boy.

--Military authorities round-up about a thousand students of the local Gandhi College and sent them to New Delhi to participate in a demonstration in front of High Commission for Pakistan.

--More than 200 youths are subjected to severe torture during a crackdown in Amargarh, Sangrama and Lalagarh localities of Baramulla. A few youths are in serious condition.

·August 11. The Army has intensified "Operation Election Cleanup," the frequency of the cordon off, house-to-house searches, crackdowns and identification parades are on the increase.

--In Zeenakot area, people are out to demonstrate and protest against the troops' increasing and non-stop atrocities. The people put barricades on the roads and blocked traffic. People complain that troops cordon off their locality, arrest male civilians and kidnap young women daily.

A protester, 70­year­old Abdur Rahman, is badly beaten and is hospitalised.

·August 12. Crackdowns continue in many areas of Srinagar.

--The task force personnel arrest Abdul Hai, nephew of Jamaat-e-Islami leader Muhammad Ashraf Sehrai, from Takipura, Lolab.

--Ghulam Nabi Zargar of Wanpura and Mohammad Jabbar of Doro are shot to martyrdom by the Task Force men.

--Indian occupation forces commit serious atrocities in continued crackdowns for the last several days in Pakharpura, Tangmarg and Yusmarg localities.

·August 13. Troops kill three suspected militants Jalaluddin, Tariq Ahmed and Mohammad Farooq in Redvani area of Islamabad. Also, troops mortar­bomb and destroy four houses there.

·August 15. In Berwa, Budgam, the troops besiege village of Zogo and destroy a house by mortar­bomb. Those killed inside are Farooq Ahmed and Latif Ahmed.

--The troops arrest young Bilal Ahmed in Budgam. His tortured body is later retrieved from custody.

--In Chata Bag, a Jamaat­e­Islami worker Rafiq Ahmed is subjected to severe torture.

·August 16. Several homes are burnt to the ground during a crackdown in Doni Bagh, Chaodora.

--In Murhama Bejbihara area of Islamabad, troops arrest a bank employee, Ghulam Rasul Dar, and ransack houses of two other civilians, Sohail Furqani and Aamir Jamee.

--During an identification parade the BSF personnel torture 8­year­old Shagufta, 5­year­old Janda, and 10­year­old Abbas to force their mother to reveal her husband's whereabouts. People take to the streets to protest the brutalities and personnel open indiscriminate fire killing 20 protesters.

--Troops fire upon a funeral prayer in Dangarpura Aabgir area of Baramulla, wounding 10 persons.

·August 17. The Rashtriya Rifles (RR) personnel resort to random firing at Ram Hall in Hindwara area killing 80­year­old Abdul Ghani Lone and injuring two others, Mohammad Ashraf and Mohammad Rafiq.

--During a crackdown in Hindwara, two civilians, Abdul Ghani and Akbar Dar, are tortured and killed and several others arrested.

·August 18. Troops carry out a crackdown in Islamabad and besides torturing innocent civilians, arrest several people. Troops also warn villagers not to boycott the upcoming elections.

--Fourteen civilians are gunned down during house-to-house search operations in Bundpaw Khokharpura, Gunddarwaish, Drawini and other areas of the region to caution people not to stay away from the state assembly elections.

--In District Kupwara, Indian troops arrest an innocent civilian, Abdul Haye Khan, from Pura Laulab area and demand Rs. 500,000 as ransom for his release.

·August 19. Habibullah Hajjam, who was arrested by the Indian troops during a raid, disappear from custody and the army denies even arresting him in the first place. His family, disturbed with the situation, calls it a custodial killing.

--In Fatehpura area of Islamabad, five persons, Abdul Ahad Dar, Abdul Ahad Ginai, Abdul Samad, Bashir Ahmed Ginai and Nazir Ahmed are arrested and tortured to death. Their bodies are later disposed of by troops on a road.

·August 20. During a crackdown in Shopian Punu area of district Pulwama, troops raid several houses in the locality and torture the innocent civilians. In the same area, the house of a suspected militant is destroyed and five others are tortured.

--The BSF personnel shoot dead 70-year-old Mohammad Saeed Shah, an innocent civilian.

--The occupying troops raid Tarhagan Lagrpura area of Kupwara, torture many people while the houses of Abdul Aziz Dar and Abdul Ahad are set aflame.

·August 21. In Khanyar area of Srinagar, the occupying forces raid a house and kill six suspected militants. People protesting the brutal killings close shops and business centres and a very large number of people attend their funeral.

--The troops raid students' hostels of the Kashmir University in Srinagar, harassing the students. Two students are taken into custody.

--The editor-in-chief of the Greater Kashmir, an English daily of Srinagar, Fiaz Ahmed, is abducted at gun point by the Indian-sponsored thugs. They take him to an army camp where he is subjected to physical torture. Troops later demand fifty thousand rupees for his release.

·August 23. Forty­eight Hindu pilgrims of Amaranth Yatra are killed due to severe rain fall in the upper part of Pahalgam areas.

--A 38­day strike is called by the APHC against the proposed so-called state assembly elections. All government and semi­government offices, banks and educational institutions are to remain closed to express solidarity with the people.

--The Indian agents kidnap the Imam of a mosque and a school teacher in Srinagar.

--The troops open random fire on the funeral procession in Baramulla.

·August 24. The authorities confiscate copies of all newspapers during raids on all printing presses which carried an appeal for boycott of the so-called elections and a 38-day strike to show solidarity with the people of Kashmir.

·August 25. The body of Gulzar Ahmad, who has been subjected to torture by troops, is recovered in Anantnag.

-- The leaders of the APHC begin their door­to­door "election" boycott campaign.

·August 26. Indian army blasts three houses of suspected militants in Pulwama, and arrest Abdul Rashid Taylor, Mushtaq Ahmed, Ghulam Nabi Mir and Zahoor Ahmed.

·August 27. In Taranj area of Pulwama, occupation troops during a raid on the house of Muhammad Saeed Shah, took away valuables and arrest Manzoor Ahmed and Nazir Ahmed.

·August 28. The RR and BSF personnel have forced all food stuff stores to remain closed as long as the people boycott the "elections." And the people are advised not to come out of their homes for the same period.

·August 29. In Srinagar, the BSF, CRPF and amy cordon off Jawahir Nagar, Raj Bagh, Akhrajpura, Kanakadal, Nur Bagh, Gandpur, Waniyar and some other localities. People are ordered out in the open for identification parades. House-to-house searches and massive arrests continue. Troops have disconnect the supply of drinking water to all the areas. People are warned not to boycott the coming elections.

·August 30. In Gandbug area of Kupwara, Indian troops shoot dead an Imam of a local mosque, Muhammad Shafi Shah, who encouraged the people to boycott the upcoming "elections."

--The army evacuate a number of houses at gunpoint in Hindwara to set up additional camps in the area.

·August 31. During a crackdown in Vanigam area of Islamabad, the BSF arrests a civilian, Mohammad Shaban, a local leader of Jamaat­e­Islami; later during the day, his tortured and dead body is found close to area's BSF camp. Thousands of people take to the streets to protest the custodial killing of Mohammad Shaban.

--Troops ransack the houses of Mohammad Abdullah and Shabbir Ahmad in Nagsharban Shopian area of Pulwama and take away the valuables.

In Keelpura area of Islamabad, the CRPF set houses of Abdul Jabbar and Mohammed Kabir ablaze and on top of that prevent firefighters from entering the area.
