ICRC demands standard diets and medical facilities for prisoners

A delegation of International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) visited Joint Interrogation Centre (JIC) maintained by the Indian army, on July 27th, 1996, in northern part of Indian occupied-Kashmir.

The team examined several inmates at JIC and found that prisoners were under nourished and given diets injurious to their health.. As a result they were exposed to various diseases.

The ICRC team met with respective authorities to discuss the situation. The prisoners submitted a memorandum to the ICRC team in which they pointed out atrocities and excessive abuses that they are facing at the hands of the Indian army. Also, the prisoners told the Red Cross team that they were fighting a "War of Independence against Indian yellow imperialism," for which they were being subjected to immense torture.

The team met dozens of prisoners who have been suffering for more than a year, but were not attended by any doctor or given any medicine.

The ICRC team has recommended to the Indian authorities that the prisoners be provided with standard diets and medical facilities.
